Limoncello

Print Friendly and PDF
This blog has been neglected but I'm planning to change the situation!

For a proper come back I'm going to give out a strong recipe of the Limoncello liqueur. This drink always fascinates me at restaurants, most of which boast that it was home made. This inspired me to make my own.

Coming from a family who made its own wine and cherry brandy I knew that to make good alcohol/liqueurs you mostly need patience. Here's the recipe we used for preparing a lovely, strong and smooth Limoncello.

Ingredients
  • 5 organic lemons. Try to use lemons who have unblemished skin
  • 400g white crystal sugar
  • 500ml 94% pure alcohol. This cannot be found in the Netherlands but can be easily bought from Belgium. It seems that it can also be substituted for Vodka.
  • 500ml water
Method

  1. Clean a glass jar thouroughly
  2. Peel the skin from the lemons and place in the jar
  3. Add the pure alcohol to the lemon peel. Make sure to cover all the lemon peel.
  4. Leave for a week
  5. After a week prepare a sugar syrup by mixing the sugar and the water in a pan over medium fire. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Let the sugar syrup cool and then add to the lemon alcohol.
  7. Clean a transparent glass bottle
  8. Use a coffee filter to poor this mixture into the bottle.
  9. Place the bottle in a cool dark place and wait for 2 to 3 weeks, at which time the Limoncello should be ready
  10. Serve cooled down.
